Dialectical Behavior Therapy
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is an empirically supported treatment designed to help people manage overwhelming feelings and self-defeating behaviors. These feelings and behaviors may create major challenges in life (such as angry outburts, violence, depression, immobility and avoidance by suicide attempts, substance abuse, and eating disorders).
DBT encompasses core modules of mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness skills training. The emphasis is on building and enhancing skills to regulate emotions, deal with the distressing situations, and improve relationships. These skills are explored within an empathic, validating therapy relationship that recognizes the clients' strengths and balances the need for change and problem solving. The treatment also offers powerful, practical methods for creating a "life worth living."
DBT is based on the idea that opposites can coexist and be synthesized. This means weighing out various points of view in any situation and balancing the needs of acceptance and change. Through this balance, DBT aims to help change the behavioral, emotional, and thinking patterns associated with problems in living, while promoting the development of and reliance on inner wisdom (wise mind).
