Description: Individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities, mental health issues, and/or histories of trauma often experience self-regulation challenges and barriers to acquiring new coping skills. The Skills System is a simple, yet sophisticated, adapted Dialectical Behavior Therapy skills framework that is designed to help vulnerable learners (adolescents and adults) integrate skills that improve emotional, cognitive, and behavioral regulation capacities. This user-friendly set of nine skills and three system tools help individuals assemble adaptive chains of behavior by progressing through steps of becoming self-aware, engaging in effective thinking, and executing self-determined, goal-directed behaviors. The Skills System framework is constructed to facilitate recall and recognition; this structure helps individuals generalize adaptive strategies into complex social environments, even during times of cognitive dysregulation. This presentation will provide an introduction of the Skills System and review the enhanced teaching strategies contained in The Skills System Instructor's Guide: An Emotion Regulation Skills Curriculum for All Learning Abilities (Brown, 2011) that are used by clinicians in individual and/or group skills training sessions.
